Plural Nouns

Some nouns are always pluralized when they are used a certain way. When there are no thesaurus entries which include the singular form of such a noun, the plural form is given as the entry word:

Entry Word: leavings
Function: noun plural
Text: a remaining group or portion <the leavings of the banquet were packed up and delivered to a shelter for the homeless> -- see REMAINDER 1

When a noun is usually, but not always, used in plural form in a certain sense, the singular form is the entry word, and the plural follows the label usually:

Entry Word: habiliment
Function: noun
Text: usually habiliments plural
covering for the human body <the lady's rich habiliments and haughty manner had the host's servants thinking she was someone important> -- see CLOTHING

Such nouns are followed by s in parentheses in the synonym list:

Entry Word: clothing
Function: noun
Text: covering for the human body <a store that sells both men's and women's clothing>
Synonyms: apparel, attire, clothes, dress, duds, habiliment(s), rags, raiment, togs, wear

When a noun is used in the singular form in one sense and in the plural form in another, the singular form is given as the entry word. The plural form is indicated at the individual sense or senses:

Function: noun
Text: 1 something upon which the carrying out of an agreement or offer depends <loaned them the car with the provision that they refill the gas tank before returning it> -- see CONDITION 2
2 provisions plural
substances intended to be eaten <gave them ample provisions so they would not get hungry on the trip> -- see FOOD
